How to determine the Computer Name of your device

Issue/Question

• ITS has asked me to provide them with the computer name (or system name) of my device.
• Where do I find the computer name of my device?

Resolution

• Please see below for step-by-step instructions on how to determine the computer name of your device based on which Operating System you're using. 

Windows

1. In the Start Menu or the taskbar's Search bar, type in "system information" to search for it. Press Enter or click on System Information when it comes up in the search.

2. In the System Information window, find the line that says "System Name." Your computer name will be in the column to the right under "Value." In this picture example, the System Name is F8ZJ1J3.

3. From here, you can provide your computer name to ITS or use it.

Mac

1. Click on the Apple Menu and then click on System Preferences.
   • 
2. Click on Sharing.
   • 
3. Your computer name will appear at the top of the Sharing Preferences.
