Question
Where can I find the computer name of my device?
Resolution
What's a computer name?
A
computer name
, also known as a hostname or system name, is a label given to devices on a network, like ours at Massasoit. Each individual device has its own unique computer name.
Computer names are what ITS staff use to find and interact with devices. Using a computer name, a technician can do things like install new software and updates, back up files, and make configuration changes, all remotely over the network.
To learn how to find your device's computer name, see the instructions below.
Instructions
Windows
In the Start Menu or the taskbar's Search bar, type in "system information" to search for it. Press Enter or click on System Information when it comes up in the search.
In the System Information window, find the line that says "System Name." Your computer name will be in the column to the right under "Value." In this picture example, the System Name is F8ZJ1J3.
From here, you can provide your system name (computer name) to ITS.
Mac
Click on the Apple Menu and then click on System Preferences.
Click on Sharing.
Your computer name will appear at the top of the Sharing Preferences.
