Teams: Using the Live Caption feature in MS Teams

Issue/Question

  • How do I turn on and off the Live Captions feature during a Teams Meeting?

Resolution

Live Captions can translate and display conversational text in real-time during a Teams Meeting. Once turned on, the text will appear beneath the video panels, at the bottom of the screen.

Note: If the meeting is not being recorded, the caption text is not saved and cannot be reviewed after the meeting.

Also, as of the publishing date of this article, the feature is considered in “preview” mode (not yet available as a regular feature) and available only in English translation.

Turn the Live Captions feature on

Live Caption can only be used during a meeting.

You will see the Meeting Control bar.

  • On the meeting control bar, select  (More Options).
  • Select Turn on Live Captions (preview).

The conversational text will appear at the bottom of the screen. The text will be translated and displayed in real-time.

Turn the Live Captions feature off

  • On the meeting control bar, select select  (More Options).
  • Select Turn off Live captions (preview).

The conversational text will cease. Again, the text is not saved in an unrecorded meeting.

Live Caption works best if you

  • Speak clearly and deliberately.
  • Speak directly into the microphone.  The further away, the less accurate the translation may be.
  • Minimize background noise.
  • Have one person at a time to speak.
  • Yes, obscenities will be starred out.
