Student Computing Options

Issue/Question

  • What computer resources are available to me as a Massasoit student?
  • What kind of computer should I use for my Massasoit coursework?
  • What are the recommended minimum technical requirements for a student computer?

Resolution

Massasoit provides access to the computers and software you will use in your courses through a variety of methods. While Massasoit ITS strives to ensure maximum flexibility for students, the available methods to access particular software title may be limited by the software manufacturer, software license, or hardware compatibility. Check with your professor or the ITS Help Desk to ensure that you will be able to access the specific software title that will be used in your course.

Computers

Open Computer Labs

The College provides several open computer labs for all students. You can find a list of open computer labs and their hours of operation here.

Loaner Program

A limited number of Chomebooks, Windows laptops, and WiFi hotspots are available for loan from the campus library. You can find our more and request a loan through the Massasoit Library.

  • Chromebooks may be borrowed for one semester at a time.
  • One renewal is permitted per academic year and is subject to availability.
  • Students are financially responsible for any loss, theft, or damage to the devices.

Purchased Device

Students are encouraged to purchase their own computer to use throughout their academic career. We recommend that devices meet the minimum technical specifications below:

Windows
  • Memory (RAM): 8GB  (16GB for video editing)
  • Processor: Intel Core i5
  • Storage: 128GB
  • Operating System: Windows 10
Chromebook
  • Memory (RAM): 4GB
  • Compatibility with Google Play Store/Android Apps
Apple

  • Processor: Multicore Intel processor with 64-bit support

  • Operating System: MacOS X 10.14 or higher

Software

Software-as-a-Service

Software may be made available to you through the software manufacturer's website. You may need an access code or additional login credentials to access some software titles.

Virtual Computer Lab

All students have access to the Virtual Computer Lab. This is a Windows-based computer that you are able to run through your web browser. Because the software runs on a Windows machine in the virtual lab, you can access software in this lab using any internet-connected device - including Chromebooks and MacOS devices. This is a common way to run graphics-intensive applications on an inexpensive Chromebook
