Issue/Question
- How do I send an encrypted email message?
- I need to send protected information through email. How do I make sure it's secure?
Resolution
Warning: Sending protected information through email should be a last resort. Tools such as OneDrive, network folders, or a secure file transmission utility like SFTP, are more effective ways to share protected information, especially if the information is a large or recurring data set (e.g., an Excel file).
In order to send an encrypted email you must send the message using Outlook 2019 or Outlook365 (Outlook on the Web). Outlook 2016 does not support sending encrypted email.
Outlook 2019
- Open a new email message.
- Select Options from the menu bar.
- Select Permission and choose 'Encrypt-Only':
Outlook365
- Open a new email message.
- Click the Encrypt button in the email message:
