Change Default Email Application

Issue/Question

  • How can I change the default email application on my PC?

Faculty and Advisors using Self-Service Banner may notice that the "Email class" and "Email your advisees" options in the Class List/Advisee Listing are not opening an email addressed to the students in bcc as designed.  This can be due to the default email application not being set in Windows or the default mail handler not being set in your browser.

Students may get prompted for an email handler when clicking a Mailto link in Degree Works or Student Self-Service and would like their email default to be for Massasoit Gmail.

Resolution

Adjust the Settings

  • Type "default apps" in the search box in the lower left of the Desktop to take you to the System settings:

  • The Default apps window opens, select the Email app:

  • Choose the desired option (generally Outlook for Faculty/Staff or Google Chrome for Students using Gmail or Faculty/Staff using Office 365) when available applications display in the next pop-up:

  • If you have selected Outlook as your default mail app, you are done.

  • Next, to set Massasoit Office 365 Employee Email as your default mail handler, log into your O365 mail account in Chrome.

  • There are two ways to update your settings, either select Try it Now if Outlook is asking if you want to make this your default handler, or select the double-diamond icon at the far right of the navigation bar:

  • Either way you choose, you will next select Allow to update your mail handler:

  •

  • If you have selected Chrome as your default mail app, you must now update some browser settings.

Open Chrome, select Settings -> Privacy and Security -> Site Settings -> Additional Permissions -> Protocol Handlers.

Ensure that Sites can ask to handle protocols is selected.

For Google Chrome with a Gmail default:

  • Open Google Chrome and log into your Massasoit Gmail account.
  • There should be two diamonds in the address bar (if you do not see the diamond icons, see the instructions below)
  • Click on that icon, and it will ask your permission to change the handlers for Chrome to allow you to use a Gmail mail client. When prompted, click "Use Gmail" and then Done
  • If you log into your Gmail and there are no diamond icon, here is how to get it to appear:
    • In Chrome, click on the dots in the upper right-hand corner and then Settings
    • Scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and click on Privacy and Security
    • Click on Site Settings
    • Click on "Additional permissions" which can be found underneath "Background sync"
    • Click on Handlers
    • If it is turned off, click the toggle next to "Allow sites to ask to become default handlers for protocols (recommended)"
    • If mail.google.com is in the "Blocked" list, click the x to the right to remove it from that list. Make sure the toggle for handlers does not turn off when you do this
    • Now you can go back to your Massasoit Gmail and click the diamond icon (shown above) to allow Gmail to open all mail links
  • You can test this out by going to a website that has mailto links and clicking on an email address. If were not already logged into your Massasoit Gmail account, it will prompt you to log in. If you were logged in already, then it should automatically redirect to a Gmail "New Message" window

For Mozilla Firefox with a Gmail default:

  • Open Firefox and log into your Massasoit Gmail account.
  • Click the 3 horizontal bars in the upper right corner and then click Options
    •
  • In the General tab, scroll down to the Applications section
  • Next to Mailto, click the drop-down and change it to Use Gmail
  • Close the Options tab
  • Go to a website that has mailto links and click on an email address. If were not already logged into your Massasoit Gmail account, it will prompt you to log in. If you were logged in already, then it should automatically redirect to a Gmail "New Message" window.
