Tips for creating a secure password

  • Easy to remember can also mean easy to guess

    • An easy password is an open invitation for hackers. Try to create something that is memorable for you but tough for others to decipher.

  • Try a passphrase

    • Your password doesn't need to be an impossible-to-remember jumble of characters. Research has shown that passphrases, or simply passwords made up of multiple full words, can be just as secure, if not more so than a traditional password.

    • To create a passphrase, think of three to four words which are unrelated to each other and don't have anything to do with your personal information. Stumped? Pull out a dictionary and pick a few words at random!

  • Use a password manager

    • Password managers make your online life much easier by storing all of your passwords securely, generating new complex passwords for you, and automatically entering those passwords when you navigate to log-in pages. The only password you need to remember once you're set up is the master password to access the password manager; from there, your passwords can be accessed easily if you need them.

    • There are several options for password managers, both free (such as Bitwarden) and premium (such as LastPass) with varying levels of features and functionality.

Remember: NEVER share your password. ITS will never ask for your password. Do not include your password in any emails, messages, or on any untrusted websites.
